Description

Professor Tom 21.5" Pan Background Layout Drawing (MGM, 1948). The front yard of Tom and Jerry's house is fabulously presented in this highly detailed 21.5" original pan background layout from the MGM short Professor Tom. Directed by the duo's creators Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, this short debuted on October 30, 1948 and featured the kitten Topsy as Tom's student of proper cat and mouse relations. This layout overlooking the yard and neighborhood beyond mirrors a scene from the end of the short beginning near the 6:57 timestamp as Tom slams into the mailbox after being slingshotted by an innertube to then receive some corporal punishment from his former student and soon-to-be-crowned Professor Jerry. Noted as Sc 56 and 56A of Prod 179 in the upper left margin, this outstanding layout has been rendered in graphite and colored pencil to an image area of 21.5" x 8.75" on the pan animation sheet measuring 25" x 10.5" overall bearing a wealth of animator's notes and a center-frame studio stamp. This layout is attributed to animator and layout artist Richard "Dick" Bickenbach (1907 - 1994) who created layouts for roughly 80 MGM Tom and Jerry shorts before following Hanna and Barbera to their newly-founded studio in 1957. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, vertical fold creases, minor peghole tearing with reinforcement, faint surface wear/staining, and small edge tears, overall this lovely outdoor pan layout is in Good condition.
