Popeye Animation Drawings Sequence of 28 (Fleischer Studios, c. Late 1930s-early 1940s). Popeye combs his hair (both of them) but sees something he doesn't like in his mirror in this unique and rare sequence of original vintage 12 field 3-peghole animation drawings. We've not been able to find a matching scene in any of the Popeye cartoons we've looked at. In the drawings, Popeye is seen in his sailor outfit with a striped bib; this design was used until the fourth Famous Studios Popeye short, Scrap the Japs (release date December 25, 1942), so we feel the chance of these drawings coming from the Fleischer Studios is great. We believe these to be from either a deleted scene (or cartoon), or possibly from a practice sequence done by a new hire to test their skills. All have sequence numbers in the right-side corners, and a few have timing charts by the images; most drawings are tight images but eleven are roughs with mainly preliminary outlines and shapes. Popeye stands about 4" tall in most of the images. One drawing is matted with acetate; the opening measures 10" x 7.5", with an overall mat size of 15.5" x 13". Condition of the drawings is Very Good with minor handling and slight age-related paper toning.
