Description
Pluto Character Study/Rough Animation Drawing Group of 5 (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). The Fab Five's lovable pooch Pluto makes a delightfully cheerful appearance across this group of 5 original character study/rough animation drawings created for one of his theatrical one-reel appearances. Pluto made his unnamed prototype debut in The Chain Gang (1930) initially developed and also later refined by Disney Legend Norm Ferguson, and would go on to star in a total of 89 theatrical shorts through 1953 including several that were Academy Award-nominated. Likely from a short that debuted in the 1940s (give or take a year on either end of the decade) with each sheet exhibiting the transitional 5-peghole arrangement, these drawings feature fantastic frame-filling images of the beloved dog. Rendered loosely on sheets of 12 field animation paper, the 2 blue pencil drawings feature half-figured images averaging 4.5" x 5.25" with one including a partially rendered additional unknown character while the 3 red pencil drawings feature full or nearly full-figured images with heights averaging 7" plus one additional small face sketch. Both sequential, this blue pair and red trio of drawings are believed to all be from the same production. This outstanding group was originally held in the personal collection of Disney Legend and one of Walt's Nine Old Men, Ollie Johnston (1912 - 2008). With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, minor corner creasing, and small edge tears, overall this incredible group of Pluto character studies/rough animation drawings is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
