Description

Pinocchio Gideon Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940). "We must diagnose this case at once. Quick, Doctor, your notebook." Honest John and Gideon are up to their old tricks as they work to convince Pinocchio he's ill and can find respite on Pleasure Island. Gideon is pulling out all the stops in the 12 field layout drawing in this lot, hastily scribbling away on his notepad as the resident "doctor". Based on a nameless cat in the original book by Carlo Collodi, Gideon was given a distinct personality said to be inspired by Harpo Marx and was initially going to be voiced by legendary actor Mel Blanc before it was decided that the character would be mute. Despite his lack of words Gideon is full of energy and enthusiasm, something clear from every line of graphite and color pencil in this drawing. The scene is similar to the one at about 54:16 when the cat starts taking notes during Honest John's examination. Notes fly every which way around him and add to the comedic effect of the scene, something that was toned down in the final film. The drawing has an approximate image size of 9.25'' x 7'' and is marked for sequence 71 and scene 11, a studio stamp for Unit B in the lower right. Fair to Good condition with light edge and handling wear, a trimmed bottom edge, pinholes, light age-related toning, and tape residue at the edges.
