Nickelodeon Magazine featuring SpongeBob SquarePants and Rocket Power Preliminary Cover Layout Drawing (Nickelodeon, 1999). "There are lots of ways to show you really want Nickelodeon Magazine, how? Oh you'll think of something. Nickelodeon Magazine, Please!" SpongeBob SquarePants and Rocket Power splash onto the scene in this preliminary cover illustration for Nickelodeon Magazine's September 1999 issue announcing their series debuts as the newest Nicktoons. A staple of kids' periodicals in the 1990s, the magazine's first two issues were exclusively available via a promotion at participating Pizza Hut restaurants; it would see a full release as a quarterly publication beginning in Summer 1993, eventually growing to release 10 issues a year before concluding its run with issue 159 in Winter 2009. The final new Nicktoons of the 1990s debuted in the heyday of the network's magazine run with SpongeBob SquarePants officially premiering on July 17, 1999 about two and a half months after a Kids Choice Awards sneak peek and Rocket Power making its debut just shy of a month later on August 16. This remarkable and finely detailed drawing was created as a preliminary cover layout for the September 1999 issue of Nickelodeon Magazine, the first issue to release after the debut of both series; print of the cover included for reference. The layout has been rendered in graphite with colored pencil frame blocking to an image area of 8.5" x 9.25" on tracing vellum measuring 11" x 12" overall. This preliminary layout interestingly exhibits significantly more background detail than the final cover version particularly in the upper portion which features Ocean Shores' pier in Rocket Power. With typical handling and edge wear including a crease to the upper and lower left corners, overall this incredible preliminary cover layout drawing is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
