Description

Mickey's Rival Mortimer Mouse and Minnie Mouse Publicity Drawing (Walt Disney, 1936). Featured in this lot is an incredibly rare studio publicity drawing presenting the lovely Minnie Mouse and the arrogant Mortimer Mouse from the 1936 Disney short Mickey's Rival. The short, directed by Wilfred Jackson, introduces for the very first time Mortimer, an arrogant mouse that is after Minnie's affection. Initially, Mickey Mouse's name was Mortimer, but Walt Disney's wife, Lillian Disney, thought the name sounded too haughty and suggested Mickey instead. Both rendered in graphite on red colored pencil, the drawing presents Mortimer taking a step measuring about 5" tall, with the charming Minnie Mouse standing at 4" on the 12-field 5-peghole animation sheet. The lot presents light handling and edge wear from production. With minor age-related toning, pinholes in the top corners, and a very small tear in the bottom edge, the lot is in Very Good condition.
