Description
Mickey's Rival Group of 6 Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings (Walt Disney, 1936). "For you senorita, I will fight the bull, yes, no?" The name "Mortimer" was originally considered in place of "Mickey" for Disney's iconic star. Disney's wife, Lillian, quickly nixed that idea however, considering the name "too depressing." When a rival for Minnie's affections made an appearance in a short a few years later, what better name than Mortimer? This slick Latin-style lover (complete with his own theme music), turns chicken bones into castanets - and even taunts a bull into a fight in order to impress Minnie Mouse. The obnoxious character also helps himself to Mickey and Minnie's food - and plays a number of practical jokes on Mickey - before beating a hasty retreat from the angry bull - and leaving Mickey to deal with the problem. The rivalry would continue for years to come in "Mickey Mouse" comics, as the character of Mortimer was developed further into a formidable opponent for the cheerful protagonist. This was the only time, however, that Mortimer would appear in a theatrical short. Rumor has it that the debonair character of Mortimer was even designed after Disney himself! This film was released on June 20, 1936 and was directed by Wilfred Jackson. Famed Disney animator/directors Clyde Geronimi and Les Clark contributed animation. The sequence of drawings can be seen near the 3:50 point in the film, after Mortimer has just uttered the above dialogue. With a flourish, he has whipped the picnic blanket out from underneath Mickey (to use it as a cape for the bullfight) and poor Mickey's nose has been dunked into his coffee cup. It is unusual to see the ever-cheerful Mickey looking so agitated! This humorous sequence of drawings is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Mickey stands roughly 5" tall in most images. There are some great examples of "extreme" poses which show Mickey in various action poses - and distortion - as he struggles to remove his snout from the coffee cup. Drawings show some age-related toning and light creasing throughout. All are in Good condition.Auction Info
