Mickey's Polo Team Jack Holt Caricature by Joe Grant (Walt Disney, 1936). This David Hand-directed short was released on 1/4/36. It pitted Mickey Mouse and his gang against the Golden Age of Hollywood stars who were their opponents as well as the folks cheering in the stands. This short was inspired by Walt Disney's personal love of the game of polo. In this cartoon he is the referee who blows the whistle and throws out the ball to begin play. His character can be seen in the first 39 seconds of the short. This was a gift from Walt Disney to Jack Holt (1888 - 1951), who used to play polo with Walt and was a motion picture star. It's a rare, one-of-a-kind original caricature of Jack created by Disney Legend Joe Grant (1908 - 2005). Joe Grant began working at the Walt Disney Studio in 1933 and was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1992. It is a gouache painting on black paper; hand-cut bits of fabric and leather are added, giving the image a 3-D look and beneath the image is written "Best wishes from Walt Disney and the Gang 1935." The image of Jack and his lookalike horse measure approximately 9.5" x 8". The art is in its original glass-front frame with a mat opening of 14.5" x 12.5", in an overall 23" x 21" frame size. The most interesting part of this historic lot is in a note written on the back of the painting that reads, "Character cut out and watercolor. Character is Jack Holt. Actor of B Movies. Mr. Disney had Joe Grant do the work for a gift to his friend and polo partner. He was so pleased he gave Mr. Grant a Seltzer bottle." One of the earliest Joe Grant pieces of studio artwork we have seen! It shows minor handling wear; otherwise, condition is Very Good.
