    Description

Mickey's Mellerdrammer Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Sequence of 7 (Walt Disney, 1933). Mickey Mouse prepares for his "cross-dressing" role as Topsy in a barnyard version of classic anti-slavery play Uncle Tom's Cabin. This Wilfred Jackson-directed short is the product of a bygone era, when "Tom Shows," as they were called, were still commonplace. Several early film versions were made, as far back as 1903, with white actors appearing in blackface, and these plays were parodied in several movies, including two featuring the Little Rascals (in 1926 as a silent, and again in the 1932 short, Spanky). This is a rare sequence of seven original 12 field 2-peghole animation drawings of Mickey as he picks up his Topsy wig (drawing #130, image area measures 6.75" x 4"), Mickey about to place the wig on his head (#144, image size 4.75" x 4.75" ), Mickey, with wig on, holding a string of firecrackers (#209, image 4.25" x 5.5"), Mickey putting a firecracker in his mouth to get his blackface -- don't do this at home, kids! (#227, with an image size of 5.25" x 5.25"), Mickey in a cloud of smoke from the exploded firecracker, with only his nose poking out (#332, image 5" x 6"), Mickey in full costume, laughing (#365, image 3" x 5"), and Mickey acting the part in his dressing room mirror (#385, image 4.75" x 4.5"). All art is in graphite, with added red and green pencil highlights on #332. The sequence can be seen online, beginning at the 1:23 mark and continuing to the 1:35 mark. The pages show varying degrees of paper toning, with reinforced pegholes in one drawing, and minor handling and edge wear. Overall condition is Very Good.
