Mickey's Circus Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Sequence of 3 (Walt Disney, 1936). "Introducing Captain Donald Duck - and his performing sea lions!" And with these fateful words, the debacle begins. This Mickey Mouse cartoon was released on 8/8/36. Ben Sharpsteen directs - and among those who worked on the short were Disney titans Milt Kahl, Frank Thomas, and Shamus Culhane. In this short, Mickey plays a circus ringmaster who is holding a special free performance for the local orphanage. However, Donald's unruly sea lion family does not know how to take orders - the chaos they bring almost ends in destroying the entire circus. The above dialogue can be overheard during the exact shot from which these drawings are taken, near the start of the film at the 0:38 mark. Ringmaster Mickey is standing on a small platform and giving "Captain Donald" a very spirited introduction. Mickey is frowning, not out of anger, but out of concentration - and to project his voice. This is a wonderfully expressive sequence of three rare drawings, which have Mickey gesturing so energetically that his top hat is launched into the air! Rendered in graphite on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper, with large full-body images. Slight handling, toning, and edge-wear. In Good condition.
