Mickey's Amateurs Goofy and Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Sequence of 5 (Walt Disney, 1937). "Okay, fellas - let's get hot!" Moments later, Goofy seems surprised that his rickety "automated-orchestra" could not keep up its frenetic pace for long, after he upshifts gears to play "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight"... Poking fun at the popular amateur hour radio programs of the day, Mickey's Amateurs features Mickey as the emcee of his own on-air show; he lets guests know of their dismissal by ringing a loud gong. The auditions range from painful (Peg-leg Pete), to downright violent (Donald and his sub-machine gun-accompanied nursery rhyme), but Goofy's bit is unquestionably the funniest! His multi-instrument machine chugs along like an old steam-powered car, and sounds more like an Oom-pah band than an orchestra. This clap-trap contraption eventually self-implodes under the stress, but only after the instruments each take their respective turns savaging poor Goofy. For this theatrical outing, producer Walt Disney decided to try a novel approach: using storymen as directors to see what would happen. Pinto Colvig (the voice of Goofy), Walt Pfeiffer, and Cal Penner were all recruited to helm the film - with hilarious results. Disney greats Art Babbit and Les Clark contributed animation. The film was released to theaters on April 27, 1937. This sequence contains some absolutely exceptional drawings of Goofy, as he hams it up for the audience. All drawings are full-body poses (with the exception of his feet), and are unusually large; some take up nearly the entirety of the page! A striking amount of detail is present, with regard to his costume and the number of instruments included. With his usual, heavy-lidded expression, Goofy is dressed to the nines, in a band conductor jacket and plumed shako hat atop his head. The last drawing in the group of five depicts Mickey Mouse from the waist up; he is dressed in a tuxedo and holds a conductor's baton. He measures roughly 2.5" high. Characters are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Minor creasing and toning to drawings; in Good condition.
