Merbabies Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1938). This animated short has quite an interesting history! It is one of the few shorts ever "farmed out" to other studios for production. As Snow White's Christmas 1937 premiere date loomed large over the studio, MGM lent out some of its artists to assist Disney on production. (MGM was possibly the only studio even remotely capable of coming close to Disney's artistic standards.) To show his appreciation, Disney returned the favor by giving the short to his former employees, (who had both just been let go at MGM) Hugh Harman and Rudolph Ising to direct. (Consequently, none of the non-Disney staff is mentioned in the on-screen credits.) The film was released on December 9, 1938. Much like the goddess Venus, the stars of this film are born of sea foam one day. The infant mermaids and mermen quickly swim to the bottom of the ocean, where they stage an impressive undersea circus, complete with parade. With bubbles provided by a giant whale napping on the seabed, the merbabies stage an elaborate bubble ballet - which could easily rival anything produced by Busby Berkley! Ultimately, the whale lets out a giant sneeze - and blows all of the merbabies back up to the surface where they once again dissolve into foam... This drawing is from a scene near the end of the film, in which a cheerful merbaby all draped in pearls, performs her little dance high atop a rising bubble. It can be seen at the 6:02 point. The merbaby is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field animation paper. Tellingly, this particular drawing only has two pegholes along the bottom, as opposed to the five being used in-house at Disney at the time. The figure stands nearly 4" tall and the drawing is in Very Good condition. A great piece with an interesting backstory in animation history!
