Mary Blair "Birdman" Wall Paper Design Painting Original Art (1937). In John Canemaker's book Magic, Color, Flair: The World of Mary Blair, he writes, "The wallpaper sample... highly stylized grounded hunters preying on birds on the wing -- was Mary Blair's submission for a competition sponsored in 1937 by United Wall Paper Factories Inc. Mary attempted to augment the small earnings from her fine art watercolor sales with commercial work. She did not win the contest and eventually applied for employment at animation studios." This is the historic Mary Blair painting she submitted to the contest, seen on page 53 in the book. Art is in gouache on 26.5" x 26" board, with her entry form still on back of the board. It reads: Title -- "Birdman" and has Mary's name and full Clayton Avenue address. It is hand-dated Feb. 20, 1937, stamped March 3rd 1937 as well. Painted area is 18" x 18". Handling and major edge wear and tears on the borders, the painted area's condition is Good. Historic and important piece of artwork from the hand of Mary Blair! From the Mary Blair Family Trust Archives.
