Description

Marc Davis Original Sketchbook (Walt Disney, c. 1939). Offered in this lot is an astonishing collection of sketches by the hand of one of Walt's Nine Old Men, the accomplished animator Marc Davis (1913 - 2000). As we open this stunning hard-bound collection of drawings, measuring approximately 10.25" x 12.5" x 1.5", we see a note on the inside of the front cover inscribed, "This notebook is personal property of Marc Davis. Return to Same!!" The more than 200 pages, dated around 1940 (matching the early production stages of Bambi), display a wonderful variety of animals in natural poses, rendered in graphite, pastel, charcoal, and ink on 12-field 5-peghole animation paper. Lions, tigers, swans, crocodiles, bears, horses, and many more animals are gracefully captured by Marc with particular attention to the anatomy, ranging from the gestural to detailed color drawings, each as impressive as the last one. Some drawings show Marc Davis' chop stamp. Eight of the drawings are detached from the sketchbook. The front and back cover show handling wear. The pages present normal age-related toning and minor edge wear, with some showing light smudging. Overall, in Good to Very Good condition
From the Disney Legend Inductees Marc and Alice Davis Archive.
