Description

Little Hiawatha Hiawatha Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1937). This is an absolutely adorable drawing from a pivotal moment in this Disney adaptation of the famous Longfellow poem...The short was directed by David Hall and released on May 15, 1937. The famous Swedish illustrator Gustaf Tenggren created much of the layout concept art - and it shows in the final product! Many of the woodland creatures closely resemble those from another film Tenggren worked on, Disney's "Snow White", which was released that same year. This was one of many Disney shorts which received an adaptation in Good Housekeeping magazine, in order to stir the public's excitement. Little Hiawatha aspires more than anything to be a fearsome hunter, though he can't ever seem to get the upper hand on any of his prey (or to keep his pants from falling down). When he finally does corner a young rabbit, he can't bring himself to shoot it. In return for his kindness, the animals of the forest come to his aid after he is attacked by an angry bear. This drawing captures the precise moment when Hiawatha has his change of heart and lowers his bow. From his moccasins to the feather atop his headband, he stands 7.5" tall. The drawing is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field, five peghole animation paper. In Fine condition.
