Invitation to Dance "Sinbad the Sailor" Animation Layout Drawing by Gene Hazelton (MGM, 1952). Invitation to Dance was an unusual film, a trilogy of stories with no dialog, everything told in dance and music. Filmed in 1952, it wasn't released until 1956, due to doubts of its commercial value by MGM. Gene Kelly starred in all three segments; the most impressive was the third, "Sinbad the Sailor," which combined live action and animation. The animated Sequences were provided by the Hanna-Barbera Studio, with assists from several Walt Disney artists. This impressive and rare layout drawing of the dragon-like snake that wraps around sailor Gene Kelly (generally considered the highlight of the film) is in graphite and red pencil on a 12-field sheet of 3-peghole animation paper, with an approximate image area of 10" x 8". In Very Good condition.
