Description
Harry Potter Sketch by Mary GrandPre' (Scholastic Press, 2007). To quote Dumbleldore, "It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be." Harry Potter quickly grew to be the best-selling children's book series ever and has ultimately grown to become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all-time with an estimated value of over $25 billion. First introduced to readers in 1997, the adventures of the young wizard-in-training captivated readers and carried on through seven books, the last four being the fastest selling books in history. All have been translated into 80 languages and adapted to namesake films resulting in the third highest grossing film series of all-time. It is a true phenomenon that continued after the final publication with spin-off books, movies and theme park attractions. The cover art for all seven Harry Potter books sold in the U.S. through Scholastic Press were designed and illustrated by one artist, Mary GrandPre'. In 2007 she was interviewed for a local news story during which she created this original natural chalk rendering for the camera. The 14" x 8" portrait of Harry, complete with lightning bolt scar, is on tan paper and signed by the artist in the lower right. It's a striking image of this globally recognized and beloved character by the one artist chosen to create original book cover art for U.S. audiences. She has also illustrated covers for other J. K. Rowling books such as The Tales of Beedle and Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Included in the lot are two photographs taken of the artist during the television interview when the drawing was made and one of them shows her in the act of creating it. Very little artwork of Harry Potter by Mary GrandPre' has ever made it to market and this one-of-a-kind piece represents a unique opportunity to own an original by her. It is in a 22" x 24" frame under glass with a mat opening of 14" x 16". Condition is Very Good and frame is sold as-is.Auction Info
