Hank Porter "Stalag Luft III" WWII Insignia Preliminary Design Original Artwork (Walt Disney, 1940s). Here's a rare, one-of-a-kind from the hand of Disney Legend Hank Porter (1900 - 1951). During WWII Porter and his fellow Disney artists created nearly 1,300 military insignias for the American troops and their allies. This preliminary drawing by Porter showing Donald Duck behind bars, was created for Stalag Luft III. We can see Walt Disney holding the final version on page 125 in the book, Disney During World War II: How the Walt Disney Studio Contributed to Victory in the War. Stalag Luft III was a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, which held captured Western Allied air force personnel. It is best known for two escape plots by Allied POWs, one in 1943 that became the basis of a fictionalized film, The Wooden Horse (1950). The second breakout was depicted in the film The Great Escape (1963). This is quite the historical item! Rendered by Hank Porter in graphite on 8" x 10" onionskin paper. The piece is matted to 13" x 13" with a matboard aperture of 8" x 8". This extraordinary artwork is in Very Good condition.
