Hank Porter - Gremlins WWII Insignia Illustration (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). When Roald Dahl was a British Flight Lieutenant assigned to the British Embassy in Washington, DC during WWII, he wrote about Gremlins, "Only pilots and navigators and gunners who fly can see these things!" Walt Disney was so intrigued he started working on an animated story. It never saw production (beyond a series of Disney comic book stories by Walt Kelly), but Dahl did release it as a book in 1943 with art by Disney artist Bill Justice. In 1944, rival Warner Brothers introduced the "Gremlins from the Kremlin" in their cartoon "Russian Rhapsody." Dahl went on to write James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Disney's Gremlins were used on 28 war-time insignias. This design for the Royal Canadian Air Force is by Hank Porter. It is graphite and color pencil on velum and measures 7.5" across. Slight tear in the upper right corner. WWII Gremlin original artwork is very hard to find. In Fine condition. Originally from the Hank Porter Estate.
