Description
Hank Porter - Gremlin WWII Insignia Illustration Animation Art (Walt Disney, 1944). When Roald Dahl was a flight lieutenant assigned to the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. during World War II, he wrote about gremlins: "Only pilots, navigators, and gunners who fly can see these things." Walt Disney was so intrigued he started working on an animated gremlins short. It never saw production (beyond a series of Disney comic books stories by Walt Kelly) but Dahl did create a story book in 1943, with art by Disney Legend inductee Bill Justice. (Dahl also went on to write James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.) Still, gremlins were used on 28 wartime insignia designs. This is rare, original, final painting/artwork by Hank Porter, who ran Disney's insignia division along with Roy Williams. This is a never-before-seen original hand-painted WWII insignia design with a gremlin dreaming of having a cold beer! What an image! This was created for the 716th Bombardment Squadron/449th Bombardment Group. This piece is new to the market and is accompanied with a letter to Major H. O. Fichte dated September 13, 1944 on Walt Disney Productions letterhead from Vernon Caldwell Public Relations, as well as the entire licensing agreement, granting the United States government the exclusive right to use and reproduce the artwork, which it lists as "Gremlin reclining on a bolt of lightning". The agreement is signed by long-time Disney attorney Gunther Lessing. The art is in gouache on circular illustration board with an approximate image area of 6" in diameter; the "Walt Disney" signature on the artboard was added by Porter. Minor handling and edge wear, none of which affects the magnificent image. There has been slight fading to the paint over time, but the overall condition is Very Good. The letter and licensing agreement have handing wear, edge wear, and border tears, but are intact. A rare find!Auction Info
