Description

Gustaf Tenggren - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White and Prince 11" x 11" Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1937). The fabled kiss that will wake Snow White from her cursed slumber is about to take place in the absolutely magnificent original concept painting offered in this lot, created by the renowned Gustaf Tenggren (1896 - 1970).

Tenggren, previously known for illustrating fairy tales in the Swedish fairy tale published anthology Among Gnomes and Trolls, started working at Disney during the Depression in 1936, becoming Chief Illustrator and one of the art directors on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. An outstanding demonstration of Tenggren's artistic skills, this gorgeous 11" x 11" picture, rendered in ink and gouache, shows our valiant Prince in the forest, kneeling next to the lovely Snow White, dormant, although not for long! Astonishing details such as the flowers next to Snow White's hair or the engravings of angels on the base she's resting on grant this illustration an immersive quality that captivates the imagination.

Without doubt, Gustaf Tenggren's incredible watercolor concepts for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are the most historically significant art ever produced by the Walt Disney Studio. Although originally created as concept art for the set designs of the groundbreaking Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney used Tenggren's artistic paintings to illustrate a Snow White storybook in 1938. Featuring a superb rendition of the fabled scene that precedes the "Happily Ever After" moment at the end of the story, this picture also appeared on the pages of the magazine Good Housekeeping in the year 1937, months before Disney's first animated feature-length film premiered.

The lot is displayed in a 21.25" x 21.25" glass-fronted frame. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. This picture can also be seen on page 152 of the book Walt Disney's Mickey and the Gang Classic Stories in Verse. With minor handling wear from production and normal age-related toning, the condition is Very Good.
