Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing (Winsor McCay, 1914). "Never mind that sea serpent! Gertie raise your left foot!" Gertie is in the middle of raising her foot upon Winsor's commands, when a Sea Serpent pops up in the lake next to her and diverts her attention. The Sea Serpent rising up and then going back underwater was an excellent tool to display Winsor's new groundbreaking animation. This film begins with a title card that reads "Winsor McCay -- America's Greatest Cartoonist." McCay was also animation's first superstar. This is an outstanding and important piece of inked production artwork from the hand of Winsor McCay (1869 - 1934), used to create the landmark animated short, Gertie the Dinosaur. This cartoon premiered on February 8, 1914 at the Palace Theater in Chicago; it's ranked #5 in Jerry Beck's book of The 50 Greatest Cartoons. This historic piece is one of the single best dead-on images of Gertie we have seen, as well as the first one with the Sea Serpent! This image can be seen around the 8:39 mark. Gertie is an amazing 5" image; the Sea Serpent peeking out of the water is 1". Art is on 9" x 7" rice paper mounted to board; the number 52 is inked in the right hand corner. Matted with an opening of 10" x 8", and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 20.5" x 18.5". Frame is sold as-is. Artwork has a few tiny discolored spots away from any artwork, but in overall Very Good condition.
