Floyd Gottfredson - Mickey Mouse Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney, c. 1931). Floyd Gottfredson (1905 - 1986) did the defining work on the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip. He was a 2003 Disney Legend Inductee and inducted in the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2006. He was hired as an apprentice animator by Disney Studio on 12/19/29 and on April 1930 began what was thought to be a temporary assignment, working on the four-month-old Mickey Mouse comic strip. His first strip came out in 5/5/30 and his first Sunday was released on 1/17/32. Here is a rare signed developmental study drawing of Mickey by Mr. Gottfredson, created in ink and graphite on 2-peghole background paper, with two different scenes on the page. The cabin with chimney and smoke and hand in the sky are very similar to elements in a Minnie Mouse family plot line story. The villainous characters and hand in the sky are similar also to the villains and apparition in the sky in the "Slicker and the Egg Robbers" storyline. Also, the character Measly Mouse would also later turn into Ruff House Rat. A separate sketch of "Itchy Ike" by Gottfredson is also matted with the Mickey drawing, again in ink and graphite, on a 7" x 5.5" piece of board. Both sketches are extremely early pieces of Gottfredson art, and are a true part of Disney Studio history. The two drawings are framed with Plexiglas with an overall frame size of 23.5" x 29.5". Fine condition.
