Flip the Frog Animation Drawings Group of 18 (Ub Iwerks/Celebrity Pictures, 1930-32). Ub Iwerks (1901 - 1971) is widely considered Walt Disney's right-hand man during the early days of the Disney Studios, as well as the co-creator of Mickey Mouse. However, Mickey wasn't the only character Ub was responsible for! In 1930, Ub was feeling under-appreciated at Disney and formed his own animation studio, with a distribution deal from MGM. His first series starred Flip the Frog. Flip's cartoons were mostly forgotten until the home video boom of the 1980s, when a number of shorts were included in a "Cartoons That Time Forgot" series of VHS tapes. Today, all of Flip's animated adventures can be found online, but original vintage artwork remains extremely tough to find. Here is a rare collection of both concept and production drawings from various early Flip shorts, including Puddle Pranks (the sixth Flip short and second one made, released on 12/29/30); Laughing Gas (3/14/31, three drawings); Ragtime Romeo (5/4/31); Jail Birds (12/12/31, three drawings); Fire-Fire (2/7/32); What a Life (2/22/32, five drawings); School Days (4/13/32, two drawings); The Bully (6/18/32); and The Pony Express (11/13/32, reissued as Phoney Express). These are 12 field, 2-peghole drawings in graphite or color pencil; most of these are concept pieces that may have actually come from Ub's hand! A few pieces have inaccurate titles written on the back. There is some paper toning, along with handling and edge wear and some minor staining. Overall condition is Good.
