    Description

Ferdinand the Bull Ferdinand Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1938). "But Ferdinand just sat...and smelled." Ferdinand, who may well be the gentlest bull in all of history, has been mistaken for a ferocious, bloodthirsty animal - and is recruited for the big bullfight in Madrid. When his true pacifist nature is revealed, he is sent back home to his pasture, to sit in the grass and smell the flowers - his favorite pastime. This short was an adaptation of the wildly popular children's book, The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf. Directed by Dick Richard, and released on November 25, 1938, the film won the Oscar for best animated short for that year. One of Disney's famous "Nine Old Men", Milt Kahl provided the voice of the titular bull. During the parade sequence, near to climax of the film, many of the picadors and toreadors are actually caricatures of Disney staff. Among them are Bill Tytla, Fred Moore, Art Babbit, Ham Luske, Jack Campbell, Walt Disney, and Ward Kimball. Enormous animation drawing takes up nearly half the frame - and spans the sheet of paper from top to bottom. This is an absolutely perfect pose, which captures the essence of the cartoon in one single image. It can be seen at the 6:10 point in the film. The matador tries his best to goad the bull into a fight, but Ferdinand couldn't be more uninterested - as long as he has his flowers to smell! Large image of Ferdinand measures 7" x 10". He is rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole paper. Some slight handling; toning around edges of paper. In Very Good condition.
