Description

Fantasia "The Nutcracker Suite" Dewdrop Fairy Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940). Envisioned as a nature ballet rather than the traditional Christmas story of its source material, the "Nutcracker Suite" segment is a tour de force of effects animation. Tchaikovsky's titular Sugar Plum Fairies were depicted as graceful "Dewdrop Fairies." These tiny delicate creatures with dragonfly wings dart about the varied flora of a woodland setting decorating the foliage with magical dewdrops. Dandelions, spider webs, honeysuckle, seed pods, milk weeds, and graceful swirling ivy all catch the sun's rays and sparkle from the jewel-like dewdrops in this perfect marriage of music and art. Animator Les Clark patterned many of the fairies' flitting movements after hummingbird flight patterns. A dainty Dewdrop Fairy is drawn here in mid-flight as she reaches into a blooming flower to decorate its petals with shimmering dewdrops. This image can be seen in Fantasia at about the 15:33 mark. This wonderful drawing is rendered with graphite on 6 field, 5-peghole animation paper. The page is marked in its lower right corner with C61. The image of the fairy and flower measures about 7" x 5.25". This lovely rare drawing is in Good condition, with handling and edge wear. The page has one vertical fold and one horizontal fold, not near the image, from a previous framing, as well as uneven toning and some staining for the same reason.
