Fantasia Hyacinth Hippo Production Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940).
Fantasia begins immediately without any opening credits when the curtains open to reveal an orchestra stand. Musicians are seen ascending the stand, taking their seats, and tuning their instruments. Master of ceremonies Deems Taylor arrives and delivers an introduction to the film. Conductor Leopold Stokowski appears and begins conducting the first strains of his own orchestration of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Fantasia consists of eight animated segments set to classical music conducted by Stokowski. In the segment titled, Dance of the Hours, the dancers of the morning are represented by Madame Upanova and her ostrich students. The dancers of the afternoon are represented by Hyacinth Hippo and her hippo servants. In this lot we have a superb production drawing from Dance of the Hours. This is a first-rate animation drawing of the lead ballerina Hyacinth Hippo, wielding her power puff. The drawing was created by animators, Norm Ferguson and Howard Swift in graphite with blue pencil on 12 field, 5-peghole animation paper. The image area measures 9" x 9" and practically takes up the entire page. Two of the pegholes in this piece have been reinforced by the studio. Very mild age-related toning. The artwork is in Very Good condition.
