Description

Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Madame Upanova and Her Dance Students Original Courvoisier Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940). This original vintage layout features prima ballerina Madame Upanova-the ostrich principal-and her morning dance troop from Fantasia's "Dance of the Hours." Animated by Disney Legends T. Hee, Norm Ferguson, John Lounsbery, and Preston Blair, the sequence opens as curtains part and the drowsy dancers rouse; a flocking reach sends Madame into a feather-shedding pirouette, followed by a gentler beat as she offers fruit from a cornucopia to her pupils. Rendered in graphite with light color-pencil accents on 12-field animation paper, the drawing establishes camera angle, character spacing, and action cues-the visual blueprint that guided animators and background painters in timing gags, entrances, and choreography. The layout bears a studio date stamp of July 11, 1939, and is matted to 19" x 14". Beneath the mat rests a Courvoisier certificate of authenticity, linking the piece to the San Francisco gallery that first elevated Disney production art to museum-worthy status. A rare artifact marrying lyrical staging with impeccable draftsmanship, it offers a refined window into golden-age animation. Condition is vintage Good with toning, edge wear, smudging, and pinholes consistent with production use.
