Description
Fantasia Bacchus and Jacchus Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940). The Disney artists chose an ancient Greek setting to pair with the Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, and filled it with various mythological creatures and deities. The character of Bacchus, the god of wine, was depicted much differently than he had been traditionally - rather than a commanding, virile, or authoritative presence, he is portrayed as obese, jolly, and foolish. Famed Disney artist Joe Grant said of Bacchus, he "...should look like the balloon in Macy's parade." This drawing is from the 3rd Movement of the Pastoral, in which the fauns and the centaurs are having a wine festival in honor of the god, Bacchus. The legendary Ward Kimball and Walt Kelly both contributed animation of Bacchus; their trademark humor and masterful skill are immediately recognizable. This drawing is taken from the first scene in which Bacchus appears on-screen. He is escorted by two centaurette handmaidens (both with the lower halves of zebras), a "flock" of baby cupids, and a group of fauns. He rides into the festival on the back of his tiny unicorn donkey, Jacchus (a play on "jack ass"). Bacchus and Jacchus both arrive at the party already intoxicated; they giggle to themselves as they stumble their way into the revelry... This is an extremely cute drawing - the characters are just dripping with appeal - in their design, and in their expressions. Charming, full-body depictions of this cheeky twosome - with big smiles on both. They are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 16 field 5-peghole paper. The image area measures approximately 7" x 6." Drawing has noticeable creasing and toning throughout, as well as a bit of edge-wear. In Fair condition.Auction Info
