Description

Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) - Flit Advertisement Cartoon Original Art (Standard Oil, c. 1930s-40s). A "royal" baby sees a mosquito and a fly heading towards his bassinet in this rare original advertisement cartoon by Dr. Seuss, the pen name of artist Theodor Geisel. Long before Dr. Seuss became a household name as a children's book author, Geisel produced gag cartoons for the insecticide Flit for 17 years, beginning in 1929. The ads ran in newspapers and magazines, on billboards, and bus/trolly car interior display ads. This piece is in ink with graphite shading and includes handwritten captions - (top) "Born with a silver spoon in his mouth -" and (bottom) "but he'd swap it in for a Flit gun!" A Flit gun was a refillable hand-pumped sprayer used in the years before aerosol spray cans, circa 1929 to the mid-1950s. The unsigned artwork has an approximate image size of 8" x 5.25", matted with an opening of 10.25" x 7", and is framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 17" x 14.75". A Chuck Jones Company Letter of Authenticity is included on the backside. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. The art is in Good to Very Good condition with a few light stains and handling wear.
