Description

Dizzy Dishes Fitz the Dog Early Storyboard (Fleischer Studios, 1930). The Fleischer Studios "Talkartoon" Dizzy Dishes was the first appearance of the wildly-popular Betty Boop, albeit in a more dog-like form. Interestingly, the early development of this cartoon featured another canine Fleischer star: Fitz the dog. This pup was introduced in the early "Out of the Inkwell" series as a counterpart to Koko the Clown. In early storyboards like this one, it seems that Fitz was planned to be the angry diner seen in this short, who smashes his table after his waiter gets distracted by Betty Boop's performance. However, Fitz was replaced with a more ferocious, unnamed character in the final short. This is possibly due to some legal entanglements regarding Inkwell Studios characters since the bankrupting of the studio. This incredible storyboard depicts the restaurant in which Dizzy Dishes takes place, with a table smashed by a discontented diner in the foreground. Fitz is rendered on a separate, image-trimmed piece of paper and affixed onto the board. The piece is rendered with graphite, with the table in the foreground and Fitz being lined with black ink. The piece is marked in its top right corner with 1930, the year that the cartoon was produced. The piece measures 8.75" x 6.75". It is in Good to Very Good condition, with some handling and edge wear, including minor smudging and age-related toning.
