DescriptionDisney Consumer Products Lion King Original Drawings Group of 2 (Walt Disney, c.1990s).
The Lion King received universal acclaim from critics, who praised the film for its music, animation, and story. During its release in 1994, the film grossed more than $763 million worldwide, making it the most successful film released that year. Today, The Lion King holds the record as the highest-grossing traditionally animated film in history. Its success solidified what was regarded as the Disney Renaissance (1989 - 1999). In this lot we have two outstanding pieces created for use by Disney Consumer Products. One featuring Mufasa and Simba along with another of Pumbaa. The image of Mufasa and Simba was rendered in graphite on illustration paper. The piece is a real whopper measuring 14" x 17" with an image area of 8.5" x 12". The artwork has a note in colored pencil indicating the need to remove "Simba's butt" with a smiley face drawn next to the note. This is a fantastic piece of Disney production artwork with a crease in the upper left corner area and some tape residue on the lower left corner area. The second illustration is a terrific hand-inked Pumbaa drawing. The image measures 6" x 5.75" on 6.5" x 9.5" on heavy illustration paper. These are two fantastic pieces of working production art from the personal collection of Paul Wenzel. Paul was Disney Consumer Products' first Art Director for their creative publishing team. In 2000 he retired from Disney after 42 years. The artwork is in Very Good condition.
