Cap'n Crunch Smedley the Elephant Poster Concept Art (Jay Ward, 1969). This hand-drawn portrait of Cap'n Crunch's peanut-loving elephant Smedley is not only a one of a kind piece of art but surrounding him is the entire crew of the S.S. Guppy including the Crunch Berry Beast and villain Jean LaFoote beautifully rendered in pen and ink. Smedley too is drawn in ink, colored in marker and carefully trimmed along the outline and applied to a sheet of Letratone. That sheet was then trimmed and applied to the boarder artwork. The back of the frame has a sticker indicating that the art was produced by Jack O'Grady Studios, a Chicago creative agency that did work for Quaker Oats throughout the 1960's and 70's. This is the original design concept art for an in-pack poster available in boxes of Cap'n Crunch cereal back in 1969. It is in a 25.5" x 19.5" frame under glass. The frame is scratched and sold as-is. Condition is Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
