Bone Bandit Pluto and Gopher Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1948). Pluto wakes up one morning, hungry for a bone, and decides to go help himself to one from his private "stash"...but another backyard resident has set his eye on the dog's stockpile of bones - a gopher! Now, this gopher is not interested in bones for the same reasons as Pluto (he's vegetarian, after all), but has come up with a more creative use for the dog's crunchy snacks. In his series of tunnels and burrows resembling a subterranean ossuary, the gopher has decided to use the bones for structural support beams! Obviously a resourceful little chap, the gopher has learned to make use of whatever is nearby - and quickly discovers the hay fever-inducing properties of the plentiful goldenrod growing freely in the backyard. Both characters engage in a "sneeze-off" battle for the ages, nearly wrecking Pluto's backyard in the process. This drawing can be seen at the 5:52 point in the film, as Pluto uses his arms like a steam shovel to burrow through the gopher's tunnels, in a mad dash to regain control of his bones. This drawing is unusual in that the studio rarely depicted two separate characters on the same drawing. Large image area comprised of both characters spans roughly 10" across. Both characters are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole paper. Drawing is in Fine condition.
