Description
Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, and Bimbo Animation Drawing with Studio Printed Model Sheet Group of 2 (Fleischer Studios, c. 1929-30s). "Boop-Oop-A-Doop!" From inkwell to silver screen with sound, the Fleisher gang's all here in this original animation drawing of Betty, Koko, and Bimbo paired with a studio printed model sheet of Koko (stylized Ko-Ko) from the early era of sound films. The model sheet is attributed to Koko's Talkertoons appearances, and features the initials RT in the lower left for animator Reuben Timmins (under the name Timinsky while at Fleischer) who created an updated sheet for Koko's newly beginning sound age. The clown that would come to be known as Koko first appeared in Fleischer's Bray Studio-produced Out of the Inkwell series beginning in 1918, and later continued to appear as a supporting character for Betty Boop until 1934. Betty Boop also made her first appearance in a Talkertoons short, Dizzy Dishes which premiered in August 1930. This drawing comes from a short in her starring series reminiscent of her character's early "Jazzy Baby" look prior to the Hays Code-imposed redesign, and also features her canine companion Bimbo. Rendered in graphite on 12 field animation paper, the iconic Fleisher trio share a combined character size of 6.5" x 4.75" on the animation drawing numbered 114-1 in the upper right. Koko's model sheet is printed on unpunched 12 field animation paper with an image area of 10.5" x 6.5" and features four full-figured models and four head/portrait models. The print model sheet includes hand-shaded detailing at the cuffs, and has been professionally restored with a new backing sheet. With typical handling and edge wear including the noted restoration of the model sheet with previous pinholes and creases still visible, minor edge wear/tears to the drawing, and general age-related toning with faint surface wear, overall this remarkable early 1930s Fleisher pair is in Good to Very Good condition.Auction Info
