Description

Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, and Bimbo Animation Drawing (Fleischer Studios, c. 1930s). "Boop-oop-a-Doop!" From the inkwell to the silver screen come Fleisher's three biggest early cartoon stars (pre-Popeye and Superman) in this original 12 field animation drawing of Betty, Koko, and Bimbo! The clown that would come to be known as Koko (or Ko-Ko) first appeared in Fleischer's Bray Studio-produced Out of the Inkwell series beginning in 1918 and later continued to appear as a supporting character for Betty Boop until 1934. Betty Boop made her first appearance in a Talkertoons short, Dizzy Dishes which premiered in August 1930. This drawing from an unspecified cartoon is reminiscent of Betty's early short-skirt "Jazz Baby" flapper look prior to the 1934 Hays Code-imposed redesign, and also features her canine companion Bimbo in his final design. Rendered in graphite on 12 field animation paper noted in the upper right corner as 112, the iconic Fleisher trio share a combined character size of 6.5" x 5.75". The drawing is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling, light stains along the edges, and mild age-related paper toning.
