Babes in the Woods Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1932). "Want a ride on my broom?" A little Dutch brother and sister are lost in a foreboding wood (a precursor to the one in Snow White), but befriend a group of elves who live in the forest. Enticed into visiting a witch at her home made out of candy, the children are almost turned into animals - but at the last moment, they are saved by the elves. The brother and sister then free the witch's other child captives and the witch herself ends up being turned to stone. For this film, the Disney story men combined elements of both the Mother Goose "Babes in the Woods" and the Brothers Grimm version of "Hansel and Gretel" - along with some of their own ideas. This was to be the first Silly Symphony in color and featured animation by many then-current and future studio greats, including Les Clark and Norm Ferguson. This period saw a rapid development in the artistic progression of the studio; not only were the artists learning to depict their subjects with increasing accuracy and sophistication, they were also helping to invent a common cinematic language along with many of the other (live-action) Hollywood studios in the early sound era. Indeed, four days prior to the release of this film, Disney had started his in-studio art classes twice-weekly for his staff. This is a very large drawing depicting all three main characters - the witch and the two children. They are just coming to a landing after their ride on the broom, and have spied the house made of candy up ahead. They are rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper; the image area measures roughly 9" x 4." The drawing is matted and framed under Plexiglass, with a mat opening of 11.5" x 9" in a 17" x 15" frame; frame is sold as-is. Drawing has minor handling wear, but is in Very Good condition.
