Description

Alice in Wonderland White Rabbit Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1951). "Her...Her...Her Imperial Highness, Her Grace, Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of Hearts!" This lively rough animation drawing of the White Rabbit, as the Queen of Hearts' herald, was created by Disney animator Wolfgang Reitherman (1909 - 1985) in development of a scene in Walt Disney's animated feature based on the stories by Lewis Carroll. In the "Painting the Roses Red" sequence, the Rabbit races in, pauses to catch his breath, and announces the arrival of the Queen; see it at about the 1:00:21 mark in the film. Mr. Reitherman, one of Walt Disney's master animators known as his "Nine Old Men," supervised the animation of this scene, and this is one of his drawings. The animator wrote the designation "55A" at lower right to indicate this original's place in the scene. Mr. Reitherman came to work at The Walt Disney Studios following graduation from the Chouinard Art Institute in 1933. He animated on the short cartoons and took part in the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) as the animator of the Queen's slave in the mirror. He subsequently animated Goofy in the shorts and by the making of Pinocchio (1940) was credited for Animation Direction. He remained with the Studios throughout his career and rose to direct all of Disney's animated features from The Sword in the Stone (1963) through The Rescuers (1977). He was named a Disney Legend in 1989 along with his fellow "Nine Old Men." This drawing is in graphite over brown pencil on a sheet of 12 field 3-peghole animation paper, with an approximate image size of 5" x 4.5". Very minor handling wear and slight paper toning on the top left edge. Fine condition.
