Description

Alice in Wonderland Alice and Flowers Garden Escape Concept/Layout Drawing Group of 6 by Ken O'Connor (Walt Disney, 1951). "But I'm not a flower." "Ah-HA! Just as I suspected. She's nothing but a common mobile vulgaris." "A common what?" "To put it bluntly, a weed." Alice makes her grand escape from the garden of singing flowers in this lively series of 6 concept/layout drawings created by longtime Disney layout man and art director Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998) for the 1951 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Known for his skill in addressing perspective problems, O'Connor's ability to showcase movement through space is on full display with many of these layouts composed of multiple thumbnail panels. Shortly after enjoying the performance of "Golden Afternoon" (depicted in the first layout), Alice must flee for her life when the once-charming flowers erroneously conclude she's a weed as seen beginning near the 31:01 timestamp. The concept/layouts have been rendered in graphite on sheets of 16 field 5-peghole animation paper, and depict some rather aggressive techniques used by the flowers that did not make it to screen. The first sheet features an unassuming single image with a frame-filling area of 15.5" x 12" while the remaining 5 featuring multiple high-action panels ranging in individual size from 2.75" x 2.25" to 13.5" x 3.5" with their sheets' full image areas ranging from 14" x 7.5" to 15.5" x 11.25" overall. With typical handling and edge wear including age-related toning, small areas of smudging, minor corner/edge creasing, and paperclip binding wear, overall this dynamic concept/layout drawing series is in Good condition.
