20,000 Leagues Under the Sea "Vulcania" Original Painting by Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw (Walt Disney, c. 1990s). Here is a gorgeous Ellenshaw painting titled, "Vulcania" where Captain Nemo pilots his submarine, the Nautilus, to the island of Vulcania in Walt Disney's live-action film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The painting was a creative collaboration by acclaimed visual effects artists, Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw.
Peter Ellenshaw (1913 - 2007) was a matte painter and visual effects artist on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. In those days special effects awards were given to the studio, not the artist. Things changed and at the 37th Annual Academy Awards in 1965, Peter Ellenshaw would take home an Oscar for his matte paintings and visual effects on Mary Poppins. In 1993 Ellenshaw was inducted into Disney's hall of fame program by Roy E. Disney as an official Disney Legend. "Peter was a Disney legend in every sense of the word and played a vital role in the creation of many of the Studio's greatest live-action films from the very beginning,' says Disney. 'He was a brilliant and innovative visual effects pioneer who was able to consistently please my Uncle Walt, and push the boundaries of the medium to fantastic new heights. Outside of the Studio, he was a fantastic painter in his own right, and I always loved his Irish paintings and felt that he did the best seascapes in the world."
Harrison began his career at the Disney Studios before joining George Lucas at his special effects studio, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), where he produced many of the matte visual effects backgrounds for Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). He would return to Disney and eventually headed Disney Studio's effects department, Buena Vista Visual Effects (BVVE).
This original 36" x 18" canvas painting was used for a published edition of 195 prints. The painting is signed by both artists. Fine condition.
