"Tugboat" 52nd Harbor Craft Crew" Insignia Original Art by Hank Porter with Related Correspondence (Walt Disney, 1944-45). This World War II insignia design of a whistling tugboat riding a wave is not only a cool piece, but it also carries with it some important papers. The art is in ink and gouache/watercolor on illustration board measuring 7.5" x 5.5", with an approximate design size of 7.5" wide, and a Studio-made "Walt Disney" signature. This image can be found in the excellent Japanese book on Disney insignias, Characters of Military on page 235. With the artwork are four fascinating items. The first is the original response from the Disney Studio to the 52 Harbor Craft Crew out of San Francisco, promising them a design, but asking if they would mind waiting, due to all the many similar requests they were receiving. It's on Walt Disney Productions stationery, dated October 31, 1944. Next is the Disney letter (on a letterhead featuring The Three Caballeros) that accompanied the artwork, dated January 8, 1945; both of these were signed by Vernon Caldwell from the Disney Public Relations Staff. The original one-page License Agreement signed by studio attorney Gunther Lessing, dated December 29, 1944, was also sent with the art. Finally, a handwritten note from the commander of the Harbor Craft Crew thanking the studio, dated January 20, 1945, rounds out the group. Letters and paperwork all have been two-hole punched at the top, and are in Good to Very Good condition. Artboard for the design has some age-related toning and handling/edge wear that really doesn't affect the image; Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
