Willie the Kid Jolly Frolics Production Cel Set-Up (UPA, 1952). An original historic set-up from the UPA Jolly Frolics cartoon, released on June 26, 1952. Both Bill Melendez and Grim Natwick worked on this short, written by Bill Scott, T. Hee, and Robert Cannon. Directed by Cannon, this is considered one of the best "cartoon modern" shorts to emerge from this hip and innovative studio. This is a rare original hand-painted background of the imaginary Western town that was located right in the middle of suburbia, with Willie and his gal riding horseback (actually dog-back). The 12-field cel is placed over a hand-inked and hand-painted production background, with a clear pan cover cel over the production cel. A second cel with the word "BAM" rounds out the set-up. There is paint loss throughout Willie and other characters, but the key here is the stylized background. The cels are in a black presentation style mat, with an image area of 17" x 8".
