Description

TRON "Tron with Disc in IO Tower" Pair of Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparencies (Walt Disney, 1982). "This is the key to a new order. This code disc means freedom." Tron stands poised in a dynamic stance, his illuminated identity disc held aloft with an air of unwavering determination in this pair of black and white Kodalith (a.k.a. Ektachrome) continuous-tone transparencies from the cult-classic, Sci-Fi feature-length Walt Disney Production of TRON. This rare cinematic treasure features Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) in a still that captures the "human" quality of the calculating security program. The film's associate producer and visual effects supervisor, Harrison Ellenshaw noted that, "It is my recollection that we didn't use the term CGI until right after TRON. I remember that term is included in the Cinefex article on the film." To achieve effects, actors and sets in TRON were initially photographed in black-and-white. The computers at the time could not do animation, so the frames had to be produced one by one. Framed enlargements were placed over a light source and re-photographed through colored camera filters. In some of the more complex sequences each frame could take up to six hours to produce. This panoramic Kodalith transparency of the stage photography by DP Bruce Logan, was enlarged from the original 65mm B&W fine-grain film. Measuring 20" x 12", with an image area of 19" x 8.5", this transparency is in Fine condition. Whether displayed as a cherished collector's item or a conversation-starting centerpiece, this image captures the emotive undertones and the enduring power of humanity in the world of advanced technology that is TRON.
