TRON Tron with Code Disc Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparency (Walt Disney, 1982). This amazing Ektachrome continuous-tone transparency from the groundbreaking film TRON represents a remarkable piece of cinematic innovation. Though initially overlooked at the Academy Awards®, the film ultimately received a Technical Achievement Award fourteen years after its release in recognition of its pioneering visual effects. To create the revolutionary computer-world aesthetic, actors and sets were first photographed in black-and-white. Enlarged frames-such as this example-were produced as continuous-tone transparencies and placed over illuminated light sources, then re-photographed through colored camera filters to achieve the film's signature glowing look. At a time when computers could not yet generate full animation, each frame had to be painstakingly created individually, blending practical photography with emerging digital techniques. Measuring approximately 20" x 12" with an image area of 19" x 8.5", this striking production element showcases the artistry behind TRON's visual breakthrough.
