Description

TRON "Flynn on Light Cycle" Pair of Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparencies (Walt Disney, 1982). This rare pair of black-and-white Kodalith enlargements-often referred to by TRON collectors as "Ektachromes"-captures Kevin Flynn mid-dash on his light cycle, his determined expression frozen in pure, kinetic focus. Enlarged from 65mm B&W fine-grain stage photography by director of photography Bruce Logan, each transparency measures 20" x 12" with an image area of approximately 19" x 8.5". To craft TRON's luminous look, actors and sets were first photographed in black-and-white; the production then placed framed enlargements over a light source and re-photographed them through colored camera filters. Because computers of the era couldn't render full animation, these frames were built one by one on the animation stand-an exacting hybrid process later honored with an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement, fourteen years after the film's release. The result here is a striking duo of production-borne transparencies with crisp edge detail and rich contrast that conjure the hum of the light cycle and the speed of the Grid's glowing highways. A superb display set from a landmark in visual-effects history. Condition is Very Good.
