Description

TRON Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparency Featuring Tron (Walt Disney, 1982). This original Ektachrome continuous-tone transparency features Bruce Boxleitner as Tron in a striking full-body image. Within the story, Tron (code "JA-307020") is the security program Alan Bradley created in his own likeness to monitor communications between the MCP and the real world. Captured by the MCP and forced onto the Game Grid, he is freed by Kevin Flynn and ultimately helps shut the MCP down as Alan commanded. A rare cinematic artifact-often colloquially called a "Kodalith"-this transparency is part of the DNA of TRON's look. Fourteen years after release, the film earned an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement. The effect was achieved by photographing actors and sets in black-and-white; this 65mm fine-grain frame (shot by DP Bruce Logan) was enlarged, backlit, and re-photographed through colored filters, with frames built one by one because computers could not yet render full animation. Measuring about 20" x 12", it is a luminous time capsule from a pioneering era of science-fiction cinema. Overall minimal handling wear; condition is Very Good.
