Description

TRON "Commander Sark" Ektachrome Continuous-Tone Transparency (Walt Disney, 1982). This original Ektachrome continuous-tone transparency (often called a "Kodalith") spotlights Commander Sark, portrayed by David Warner, in striking panoramic format. Designated code "ES-1117821," Sark is the command program Ed Dillinger created in his own likeness to serve as the MCP's chief lieutenant and the film's secondary antagonist. He oversees the conscription and "training" of captive programs, pressuring them to renounce their belief in Users; while guarding the approach to Master Control, he is ultimately destroyed by Tron. (Warner also appears as Dillinger, ENCOM's Senior Executive Vice President and the movie's primary antagonist.) Measuring 20" x 12" with a 19" x 8.5" image area, this production-borne transparency embodies TRON's pioneering hybrid workflow: actors and sets were photographed in black-and-white on 65mm fine-grain stock, enlarged to transparencies, then backlit and re-photographed through colored camera filters. Because computers of the era could not render full animated frames, shots were built one by one on the animation stand-an exacting process later recognized with an Academy Award® for Technical Achievement, 14 years after release. Condition is Very Good. A VFX-collector highlight from Disney's cult sci-fi milestone.
