Description

The Three Caballeros José Carioca Production Cel and Painted Background (Walt Disney, 1944). During World War II, Disney animation artist John Basmajian (1899 - 1989) was given permission by the studio to keep discarded art, making him one of the first serious collectors of animation art. This fabulous nitrate cel of José Carioca, who managed to split himself into four while demonstrating the Samba to Donald Duck, originated from Mr. Basmajian's collection. It's without a doubt one of the best José Carioca pieces we've seen; in fact, Disney liked it enough to include in a 1960 TV episode of Walt Disney Presents, "Two Happy Amigos." The images of José in a "tutti frutti hat" ala Carmen Miranda (found in The Three Caballeros at roughly the 26:45 mark) are each 5.75" tall, with an overall width of 8.5" wide. The cel is placed on a custom circular painted background (typical of Mr. Basmajian's framed art), and matted with an opening of 10" x 8". The setup is framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 19" x 17". Frame is sold as-is. The cel exhibits slight waviness as is typical of vintage nitrate, but is otherwise in Fine condition.
