Description

The Sword in the Stone Merlin Key Master Setup (Walt Disney, 1963). "So, you did drop in for tea, after all... Oh. You are a bit late, you know." For all those wishing to pull the sword from the stone, here is a stunning Key Master setup of the one and only Merlin to aid you in your quest! The greatest wizard and self-appointed teacher of Wart (aka King Arthur), Merlin was primarily animated by three of Disney's "Nine Old Men" Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Milt Kahl and voiced by Karl Swenson. He's also one of the only characters from the film to make an appearance in other Disney properties, transporting himself into multiple television and video game series like Kingdom Hearts, Sofia the First, and Disney Dreamlight Valley. The detailed hand-painted cel, xerox background overlay, and cozy gouache on board Key Master background are all 16 field and created for about 8:57 as Merlin checks his pocket watch and notes that Wart had arrived later than he had anticipated, cementing himself as a quirky but loveable mentor. Both cels are numbered in the lower right and Merlin is large at about 7.25'' x 10''. The films backgrounds are credited to the talents of Walt Peregoy, Bill Layne, Al Dempster, Anthony Rizzo, Ralph Hulett, and Fil Mottola and the beautiful background includes the production number, sequence number, and signoff by art director Ken Anderson on the board. The board still has the original artist tape at one edge. The magical lot is in Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear along with faint toning and rippling.
From the Disney Legend Inductee Andreas Deja Collection.
