Description

The Sword in the Stone Arthur (aka Wart) Production Cel (Walt Disney, 1963). This fantastic original production cel features Arthur-"Wart"-from Walt Disney Productions' The Sword in the Stone (1963), the studio's 18th animated feature. Directed by Disney Legend Woolie Reitherman from a story adapted by Disney Legend Bill Peet, the film follows orphan Arthur under Merlin's eccentric tutelage and culminates in the fabled pulling of the Sword in the Stone. Captured around the 39:03 timestamp, Wart is discovered scrubbing the castle floor as bubbles float everywhere. The approximately 5.5" image is hand-painted on 16-field acetate, while a separate hand-inked effects cel carries the sparkling bubbles for added depth and motion. The setup is paired with a scene-matched color print background and handsomely matted to 20" x 16" for display. Wart was animated by Disney Legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston-two of "Walt's Nine Old Men"-whose expressive draftsmanship shines through the character's earnest pose and lively staging. Condition is Good, with some paint cracking and lifting noted on the tree stump with the anvil element; otherwise, clean paint and strong lines. A charming, display-ready piece from a beloved Disney classic.
